SPARTA Inc. to become the lucky new owner

McAfee Inc. has announced that it is selling its McAfee Research assets to systems engineering firm SPARTA, Inc.

McAfee Research conducts advanced computer and network security research focusing on host, network and wireless intrusion prevention; malicious code defence; security policy and management; high performance assurance and forensics; and threats, attacks and vulnerabilities.

Under the agreement, SPARTA - whose core business areas are strategic defence and offence systems, tactical weapons systems, space systems and information systems - will acquire McAfee's research contracts that are already in place.

Previously, McAfee Research has worked with organizations and government agencies that include the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Advanced Research and Development Activity of the national intelligence community, the National Security Agency, the Army Research Laboratories, Telcordia, Hewlett Packard, Juniper and Boeing.

According to McAfee, much of the content of the unit's research efforts has transitioned from historically unclassified research to classified research and development activities.

McAfee Inc. Chairman and CEO George Samenuk said: "We continue to make the decisions necessary to further streamline our business and to hit our target of a 25% pro-forma operating margin by June ... SPARTA is committed to supporting and building the McAfee Research business and we believe the team will benefit from the sale of the assets."

The sale of the assets will not affect McAfee's malicious code and vulnerability research - McAfee Anti-virus and Vulnerability Emergency Response Team (AVERT) continues to focus on this area of research.
