Emotet in 2023: a comprehensive overview for decision makers on the resurgence, evolution and threat landscape

This presentation forms part of the CTA's Threat Intelligence Practitioners' Summit

Thursday 5 October 2023 16:30 - 17:00, Small Talks room

Jonas Walker (Fortinet)

In today's rapidly evolving cyber-threat landscape, understanding the intricacies of prominent malware strains is crucial for informed decision-making. This presentation will delve into the resurgence of the notorious Emotet malware in 2023, after having been considered inactive for an extended period. I will examine its evolution over the years and discuss the malware's changing tactics and techniques, providing valuable insights for decision makers.

I will include a walk-through of a sample, elaborating on the tactics, techniques and procedures (TTPs) employed by Emotet to gain access to systems and networks. Then, I will explore what happens next, shedding light on the lateral movement of modern-day threat actors within the network. The presentation aims to bridge the gap between technical jargon and actionable information.

Attendees will leave with a comprehensive understanding of the Emotet threat, enabling them to make informed decisions to protect their organizations from this persistent and evolving malware.
