Exploring the efficacy of community-driven TI: a real-world approach

This presentation forms part of the CTA's Threat Intelligence Practitioners' Summit

Thursday 5 October 2023 09:30 - 10:00, Small Talks room

Samir Mody & Hariharan S (K7)

CTI stands for cyber threat intelligence, but it could just as easily represent 'contextual threat intelligence' or 'community threat intelligence', for without the all-important context and the community, cyber threat intelligence can be useful in theory alone. In fact, it is the community effect which imbues TI with context, viz. range, depth and, most critically, vetting! CTI must first be reliable and timely in order to be acted upon with confidence.

In this talk we intend to demonstrate the practical efficacy of vetted community TI in providing vital context for advanced cybersecurity solutions through technical use case analyses. In particular, we shall focus on three K7 Labs use cases:

  1. Supervised machine learning model training in backend automation for classification and clustering.
  2. Multilayer upstream and downstream behavioural detection (Smart HIPS) and onsite-generated detection (patent-pending K7 Adaptive Immune Response System (K7AIRS)).
  3. Proactive breach detection and response.

Samir Mody

Samir Mody graduated from the University of Oxford in 2000 with a First-Class Master’s degree in chemical engineering, economics and management. He spent over nine years at Sophos UK, the final three as Threat Operations Manager of SophosLabs. Since August 2010 he has been running K7 Labs in Chennai, India. Samir has actively contributed to the IEEE Taggant System project and other industry collaborations such as AMTSO and CTA. He has co-authored and/or presented papers and participated in panel discussions at various international security conferences (VB, AVAR, EICAR).

Samir's interests include reading (philosophy, politics, history, literature and economics), sport and classical music.

Hariharan S

Hariharan S holds a Bachelor's degree in statistics and a Master's degree in software applications. He has 20+ years of experience in the industry and has, over the years, been part of different departments within K7: ranging from technical support and product QA, to build (and release) team and research lab.

In his current capacity as Director of Threat Research at K7 Labs, he manages the research team tasked with the (un)reasonable goal of staying ahead of the ever-changing threat landscape across platforms. He is also responsible for timely delivery of protection data to all K7-brands and white-labelled products. In addition to liaising with third-party testers and vendors, he also represents K7 at various domestic and international cross-entity security fora to strengthen relationships with other security players in the field.
